Buying any used vehicle can be a minefield. Buying a used commercial vehicle can be especially difficult as used vans for sale can often have high mileage or be in a bad condition. However, with most vans being built to last, this is not always the case – or it may not matter.  Here we look at the most reliable vans on the market.

  • Ford Transit Van

The words ‘Transit Van’ instantly conjure up images of a work-horse, built for longevity that runs and runs. This reputation is fair and it’s no surprise that the Ford Transit has sold in its millions world-wide. Transit has come a long way. It’s available in three body lengths and roof heights as well as two wheelbase lengths. Engine-wise it comes as a 3.2-litre turbo diesel, a 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 and 3.7-litre V6. Featuringrear-wheel drive, each model comes with a six-speed automatic gearbox. Available as the traditional cargo hauler and also a15-seat people carrier, the Transit features LED interior lighting and has a rear door opening of 270 degrees.

  • Ford Transit Transporter

The Ford Transit Transporter will give you the same reliability as it’s bigger brother, but with more emphasis on economy and function. Available in two wheelbases, the Transit Transporter has a payload of more than 540kg. The 2.83 cubic metres of cargo room is perfect for the three rows of seats that accommodateup to seven people. It has a standard 2.5-litre engine producing 169bhp with an optional turbocharged 178bhp 1.6-litre unit. It may be more attractive than the Transit, but with optional extras and tech features available, it’s more than just a pretty face.

  • Mercedes Benz Sprinter

The Mercedes Benz Sprinter has long been known as a reliable work-horse. There are two powertrain options available on the Sprinter; a four-wheel drive 188bhp 3.0-litre turbo-diesel V6 with a five-speed automatic gearbox or or a 161bhp 2.1-litre turbo-dieselmated to a seven-speed automatic with rear-wheel drive. There is a choice of body styles and the cargo room can take up to 12 seats to haul people, or can come empty to haul cargo. With hi-tech features like crosswind stabilisation and collision prevention, safety is paramount.

  • Volkswagen Transporter

Volkswagen has for many years been synonymous with reliability. Available with a 2.0-litre diesel-turbo engine, the Transporter comes with a choice of five power outlets. The front-wheel drive options deliver 83bhp, 100bhp or 112bhp have a five-speed manual gearbox. The higher-powered models with 138bhp and 176bhp come with a six-speed manual gearbox as standard.  

  • Volkswagen Caddy

Another Volkswagen in the top five is no surprise. Available in two versions, it is built with careful attention to detail, ensuring it goes the distance.The Caddy Maxiis the longer version and bothoptions come with either a 2.0 or 1.6-litre diesel engine with a choice of outputs. With a payload of up to 750kg, these vans come with 4MOTION four-wheel drive, DSG gearbox and adaptive cornering lights. Bluetooth connectivity and roof rails make this a great vehicle for your business.
